Comedy Review: Chris Coxen's Space Clone Audition

By Hannah Ewan

You suspect that the premise of this show, like everything else about it, was conceived at 4am while sat on a floor surrounded by empty bottles. America’s sending someone into space to be cloned millions of times, so they can protect the nation. There’s no further explanation and really, there doesn’t need to be – it’s just an excuse to bring out a quartet of bonkers characters, each one more random and more likely to give you the giggles than the last.

Supposedly American stereotypes, thankfully for America there’s little stereotypical about them. Motivational speaker Stever “The Man Bomb of Motivation” Pate is straight from the deeper recesses of LinkedIn, but you’re unlikely to meet any of the others on a fortnight’s holiday. The highlight is “combat dancer” Danny Morsel – so intensely mad he hurts your stomach muscles from laughing and your brain from figuring out what the hell’s going on.

The show would fare much better at 11pm, accompanied by a glass of something strong. If you don’t get absurd, haphazardly silly comedy, you’ll find it too much. If nonsensical Mighty Boosh sketches have you rolling on the floor, you’ll love it.

Rating: 4 stars
